Flint identifies by four marks: a waxy luster on worn surfaces, smooth curved breaks that sharpen into cutting edges, hardness that scratches glass and resists a knife, and — on nodules from chalk and limestone — a white outer rind. The confirmation is the oldest test in the world: struck against steel, flint throws sparks.
The four marks and the confirmation
Flint reads as refined chert: denser, darker, waxier. Worn surfaces show a soft waxy luster; fresh breaks curve in smooth shells and meet in edges that cut; a loupe finds no grains at all; and hardness sits in quartz territory — glass scratches easily, a knife achieves nothing. Nodules that weathered out of chalk or limestone wear a white to tan rind, the crust of the host rock it grew in, and that rind against a dark glassy interior is close to a signature.
The confirmation carries the stone’s whole history: strike a sharp corner against hardened steel and flint throws sparks. The flash is not the stone burning — the edge shaves microscopic steel particles and the strike heats them to ignition, which is why a dull edge or mild steel produces nothing, and why the same trick lit muskets and tinderboxes for centuries. Where flint lives, and the artifact line
