Missouri's signature finds are written into its state symbols: mozarkite, the banded Ozark chert, and galena, the heavy gray lead ore. Around them sit quartz-lined geodes in the northeast, crinoid fossils through the limestone, and barite from the old tiff diggings. Each has a one-check confirmation, and galena adds a hand-washing rule.
The five Missouri finds
1. Mozarkite
The state rock since 1967: chert mottled in pink, green and gray, dense enough to take a jeweler’s polish, found through the Ozarks and best hunted in creek gravel around Lincoln in Benton County. It behaves like all chert — scratches glass, breaks in smooth shells, waxy when worn — and the color mottling is what separates it from the plain gray chert that litters every Ozark stream.
2. Galena
The state mineral, and the easiest identification in this guide: metallic gray, absurdly heavy at a specific gravity near 7.6, soft enough for a copper coin, and it cleaves into perfect cubes. Missouri’s southeast lead district built towns on it. It is also lead sulfide — identify it, enjoy it, then wash your hands, and keep specimens away from small children.
3. Geodes
Northeast Missouri shares the famous Keokuk geode beds with Iowa and Illinois: lumpy gray balls, light for their diameter because they are hollow, lined inside with quartz and sometimes calcite crystals. 4. Crinoid fossils
Missouri’s limestone is packed with crinoid stem segments — little stone washers and stacked columns — and the crinoid has been the state fossil since 1989. Rules and neighbors
Missouri state parks prohibit taking rocks, minerals and fossils, so the hobby runs on private permission and the handful of fee operations — and old lead-district dumps add real hazards to the usual trespass questions.
