Pink rock identification

A pink rock is usually one of six things: rose quartz, pink feldspar in granite, rhodonite, rhodochrosite, pink calcite, or something dyed. Hardness and a drop of vinegar separate all six — quartz shrugs off a steel nail, the carbonates fizz, and dye betrays itself by pooling in cracks.

What makes a stone pink

Pink is mostly a feldspar and quartz story. Potassium feldspar grains stained by iron oxide give granite its salmon speckle; trace impurities give rose quartz its soft blush; and the two showpiece pinks — rhodonite and rhodochrosite — carry manganese instead. Dye completes the list, because pink sells: howlite and marble take color eagerly and turn up in tumbled-stone bins at saturations nature does not produce.

The dye problem, and where pink hides

Pink is the most-faked color on the tumbled-stone market, and the checks from the crystal identifier apply in full: natural color zones unevenly and ignores cracks, dye is even everywhere except the cracks, where it pools darker. A damp white cloth pressed to a suspect stone catches the worst offenders outright.

In the field, pink runs regional. Granite country supplies endless salmon feldspar; pegmatite districts supply rose quartz by the fist. What kind of rock is pink?

How can I tell if pink quartz is real?
Real rose quartz is translucent with a soft, even glow, never neon, and at Mohs 7 it scratches glass while a steel nail leaves no mark. Suspect dye when the pink is hot and uniform, concentrates in surface cracks, or rubs off on a damp cloth — dyed howlite and dyed marble are the usual pretenders.
What is the pink mineral with black veins?
Almost always rhodonite, a manganese silicate: rose pink laced with black manganese-oxide veins, hard enough to resist a knife. Its cousin rhodochrosite is banded pink-on-pink instead, much softer, and fizzes in warm vinegar because it is a carbonate. The vein color plus a scratch settles the pair.
