Michigan's beaches produce seven finds worth learning by name: Petoskey and Charlevoix stones, Lake Superior agates, greenstone, Yooperlites, native copper and puddingstone. Each has a one-look tell — a hexagon grid, a curved band, an orange UV glow — and a shoreline where it concentrates. State law caps what you carry home at 25 pounds a year.

The seven finds, one by one

1. Petoskey stone

A colony of the Devonian coral Hexagonaria, turned to calcite and tumbled smooth by the lake. Dry, it hides as a plain gray pebble; wet, the surface resolves into tight hexagons with dark eyes. It has been the state stone since 1965. Being calcite, it is soft — a copper coin scratches it — and it fizzes with vinegar, which separates it from patterned granites instantly.

2. Charlevoix stone

The Petoskey’s smaller-patterned cousin: fossil Favosites coral, with cells a few millimeters across and no dark centers. Same beaches, same calcite softness, same vinegar fizz. Collectors who know both names sort them on sight by cell size; everyone else happily pockets either.

3. Lake Superior agate

4. Greenstone

Chlorastrolite, the state gem since 1972: a small dark-green pebble whose polished surface shows a segmented turtle-back pattern. Legal hunting happens on Keweenaw Peninsula beaches and old mine country. Its most famous locality, Isle Royale, is a national park where taking it is prohibited.

5. Yooperlite

Gray syenite that ignores daylight and blazes orange under a 365-nanometer UV lamp, from fluorescent sodalite in its veins. First collected near Grand Marais in 2017 by Erik Rintamaki and described in 2018, it turned Michigan rockhounding into a nighttime hobby. Daytime identification is nearly hopeless — the lamp is the test.

6. Native copper

The Keweenaw’s signature: metallic masses with green-to-black patina, startlingly heavy, and soft enough to dent with steel. 7. Puddingstone

White quartzite shot through with rounded red jasper pebbles, carried down from Ontario by glaciers and concentrated around Drummond Island and the eastern Upper Peninsula. Nothing else on these beaches looks remotely like it, which makes it the easiest identification on this page.

Wet, dry and after dark

Michigan identification is viewing-condition identification. Petoskey patterns and agate bands appear when wet and vanish when dry, so pickers work the swash line or carry a spray bottle. Yooperlites reverse the schedule entirely: a summer-night walk with a 365-nanometer lamp finds stones that daylight hunting walked over for a century. Only copper and puddingstone look like themselves in any light.

The gray majority that remains — basalt, granite, quartzite, the occasional slag from old smelters — sorts with the standard four checks in the rock identification chart, and slag matters here: the copper district produced tons of it, glassy, bubbly and routinely mistaken for meteorites. The rules: 25 pounds, and not Isle Royale

Michigan DNR rules cap collecting on state-owned land at 25 pounds of rocks and minerals per person per year, and enforcement is real — in 2015 the DNR confiscated a 93-pound Petoskey stone from a collector who had hauled it out of Lake Michigan. Isle Royale National Park prohibits collecting entirely, which is why greenstone hunting happens on the Keweenaw instead. Private shoreline needs the owner’s permission, full stop.

The limit reframes the hobby usefully: 25 pounds is a lot of good stones and very few mediocre ones. Identifying on the beach — and leaving the misses — is what the allowance is for.
