How to identify agate

An agate is banded chalcedony, and the three checks follow from that definition. Its edges glow when a flashlight is held behind them, its bands curve in concentric patterns rather than flat stripes, and at Mohs 6.5 to 7 a steel nail cannot scratch it. Jasper, chert and dyed slices each fail one of the three.

The three-part agate test

Every reliable agate check descends from the definition: banded, translucent, quartz-hard. Each test below eliminates a specific impostor, so running all three is what makes the answer stick.

  1. Step 1Backlight the edgeIn shade, press a flashlight against the thinnest edge. Agate glows warm through; jasper and chert stay dark. Wet the stone first — it reads clearer.
  2. Step 2Read the bandingAgate bands nest in curves, following the pocket the stone formed in — the fortification pattern. Flat parallel stripes suggest banded calcite or sandstone.
  3. Step 3Try the steel nailAgate at Mohs 6.5 to 7 ignores a nail at 5.5. If the nail bites, the stone is calcite, limestone or softer glass — whatever the bands say.

A fourth, silent check runs alongside: luster and fracture. Worn agate surfaces look waxy rather than glassy or dull, and broken edges chip in smooth, shell-like curves — the conchoidal fracture of all fine quartz. Neither proves agate alone, but their absence is a warning.

The dyed-slice row deserves its own sentence, because those bright blue and magenta slices are genuine agate treated to lie about color. Nature does not produce uniform neon: real agate color varies band to band, and dye announces itself by being even everywhere at saturations iron and manganese never reach. Where agates turn up

Agates form in volcanic cavities and then outlive their host rock, so they concentrate wherever erosion gathers tough survivors: gravel bars, glacial till, and famously the beaches of Lake Superior, whose iron-red banded agates were named Minnesota’s state gemstone in 1969. Hunting technique is mostly light management. Low morning or evening sun makes translucent pebbles glow against wet sand, which is the flashlight test performed by the sky. Experienced pickers walk toward the sun for exactly this reason.

Is your agate worth anything

Mostly no, pleasantly. Common beach agates are a keeping hobby, not an income; the market pays for size, intact form and vivid, high-contrast banding, and polishing sits on top as craft value. How can you tell if a rock is an agate?
Hold a flashlight against the edge in shade: agate transmits a warm glow through at least its thin parts. Look for curved, nested banding rather than flat layers. Then try a steel nail — real agate, at Mohs 6.5 to 7, shrugs it off. A stone passing all three is agate for practical purposes.
What does an unpolished agate look like?
Underwhelming — a lumpy, waxy pebble in gray, rust or honey tones, often with a pitted rind. The tells are a waxy luster where the surface is worn, shell-like curved chips at broken edges, and banding that appears when the stone is wet. Rough agates look far better dipped in water, which is how experienced pickers hunt them.
How do you tell agate from jasper?
Light. Both are quartz at the same hardness, but agate is translucent chalcedony and jasper is opaque — its iron-rich body blocks the flashlight glow entirely. A stone with jasper's brick colors that still lights up at thin edges sits in between and is usually sold as jaspagate. The nail test cannot separate them; only light can.
Are agates worth money?
Ordinary beach agates trade in the single dollars and are kept for pleasure. Money appears with size, unbroken form, strong color and clean banding — large Lake Superior agates with vivid iron-red bands command real collector prices. Cut and polished pieces sell better than rough, which is a craft market, not a mineral one.
