Ohio rock identification

The five Ohio finds

1. Flint Ridge flint

The state gemstone since 1965, from a quarry ridge in Licking and Muskingum counties that Native peoples worked for thousands of years. It runs every color plain chert refuses: brick red, blue-gray, honey, streaked rainbow. 2. Ordovician fossils

Southwest Ohio is a 450-million-year-old sea floor tipped on edge. Roadcuts and creek banks around Cincinnati shed brachiopods, horn corals, bryozoan twigs and trilobites — Isotelus, the state fossil since 1985, among them. The identification is the family test from sedimentary rock identification: fizzing limestone plus visible shells. The field skill is timing — the beds shed a fresh crop after every hard rain, and the week after a storm beats a dry month.

3. Celestine

Under the Lake Erie islands, dolomite cavities grew sky-blue celestine — strontium sulfate, Mohs 3 to 3.5, heavy for a pale crystal. Crystal Cave on South Bass Island, found by well-diggers in 1897, is billed as the world’s largest geode and is lined with it wall to wall. It is a tour, not a dig; loose celestine turns up occasionally in island and quarry rubble, identified by color, softness and heft.

4. Concretions and pyrite in shale

5. Glacial leftovers

Rules and neighbors
