How to tell if a rock is a geode

A geode announces itself three ways before it is ever opened: a rounded, bumpy, cauliflower-textured outside; noticeably low weight against a same-size stone from the same spot, because the middle is hollow; and sometimes a faint rattle of loose crystals. Solid lookalikes fail the weight test — that one check does most of the work.
The three checks before the hammer
- Step 1Read the outsideRounded to egg-shaped, with a bumpy cauliflower rind in dull gray or tan. Angular blocks, outside crystal faces and layered structure all argue for ordinary rock.
- Step 2Compare the weightSame-size stone from the same ground in the other hand. A geode reads distinctly light, because hollow replaces the densest part of the rock.
- Step 3Listen for the rattleShake it by your ear. Loose crystals shifting inside are near-proof. Silence proves nothing — most geodes hold their lining firmly.
The weight comparison is the working test, and the phrase to hold onto is same ground: densities vary between rock types, so the honest comparison is against a neighbor stone of the same kind and size, not against expectation. A candidate that passes weight and shows the rind has earned careful opening; one that fails weight is a nodule — solid mineral all the way through — or plain rock.

Opening one without ruining it
Containment and patience beat force. Wrap the geode in a sock or towel, put on safety glasses, and tap around the equator with a hammer, escalating gradually until it splits — or use a masonry saw for clean display halves.
