How to identify jasper

Jasper is opaque chalcedony — quartz colored through by iron — and the three checks follow from the definition. A flashlight cannot shine through it, a steel nail cannot scratch it, and its color is saturated where plain chert is dull. Brick, dyed stones and calcite-based trade names each fail one of the three.

The three-part jasper test

The fracture is the quiet fourth check: like all fine quartz, jasper breaks in smooth, curved, shell-like surfaces. A grainy or stepped break at jasper hardness points to quartzite or chert instead — and dull gray color at the same hardness is exactly the chert boundary, where jasper’s iron saturation is the only separator.

Brick is the one that actually fools people, because urban gravel is full of it and tumbled fragments look convincingly stone-like. The nail settles it instantly. Petrified wood sits at the opposite end — it often is jasperized quartz, and the wood grain is the bonus identification, not a contradiction.

Names that lie, and value that does not

Jasper’s market runs on trade names, and two of the biggest are not jasper at all. Bumblebee jasper — the yellow-and-black showpiece — is described in mineral references as calcite-based rock banded with arsenic sulfides: it fails the nail test and belongs behind polish and sealant, not in a pocket. Dalmatian jasper is a spotted igneous rock. How can you tell if a rock is jasper?
