How to identify valuable rocks

Most rocks that look valuable are quartz, and most metallic glints are pyrite. The honest method is elimination: weight, hardness, streak, magnet response and translucency knock out nearly every candidate at the kitchen table, for free. What survives those five checks is the short list that justifies paying a lab or an appraiser.
What makes a rock valuable at all
Value needs three things at once: rarity, demand, and condition. A mineral can be rare and worthless because nobody buys it; common agate can pay because tumbled stone has a real market and clean banding is scarce. Condition multiplies both — a cracked crystal or a weathered fossil loses most of its price before any question of species arises.
This is why identification comes before valuation, and why the order of spending matters. Every dollar step — appraisal, assay, lab report — should be preceded by the free step that could make it unnecessary.

The five signals worth checking
1. Unusual weight for the size
Heft is the cheapest density test there is. Gold-bearing rock feels startlingly heavy: pure gold runs a specific gravity near 19.3 against 2.65 for quartz, and even flecks shift the feel of a fist-sized piece. Meteorites also run heavy from iron content. 2. Hardness above glass
Gem minerals are hard: quartz varieties at 7, topaz at 8, corundum at 9. A stone that scratches a glass bottle clears the first gem hurdle; one a steel nail scratches easily has failed it. Hardness never proves value — quartz itself is hard and mostly worthless — but softness disproves most valuable claims in one stroke. 3. Metallic glints that streak the wrong color
Every metallic sparkle in a creek bed is a candidate for exactly one test: drag it across unglazed tile. 4. A magnet response
A strong response to a cheap neodymium magnet usually means magnetite or industrial slag — the two great meteorite impostors. Real meteorites do attract magnets, so the check runs in combination: magnet response plus a dark fusion crust plus unusual weight keeps the candidacy alive, while magnet response on a porous, bubbly stone ends it. 5. Banding, glow or pattern

The list is short on purpose. Fossils, common geodes and pretty jasper trade in the dollars, not the thousands, and most listed prices online are asking prices rather than sales.
When to pay for an assay or appraisal
Pay when the free checks have survived contact and the number matters. Suspected gems go to a gemologist — and if the stone is cut or set, start with the photo triage in the gem identifier, because scratch tests on finished stones destroy value. Suspected ore goes to an assay office, which reports metal content per ton rather than an opinion.
