Quartz is confirmed by three properties working together: hardness 7 that scratches glass and shrugs off a steel knife, fracture in smooth curved shells, and the absence of cleavage — it never splits along flat planes the way feldspar and calcite do. The three properties that convict

Quartz identification is a conjunction: any one property suggests, all three confirm. Hardness comes first because it is fastest — quartz defines 7 on the Mohs scale, scratches bottle glass with ease, and ignores a steel knife. Fracture comes second: broken quartz curves in smooth shells, the conchoidal fracture it shares with its glassy relatives. The third is an absence, and it is the most diagnostic of all: quartz has no cleavage, no flat planes it prefers to split along.

That absence powers the best field trick in this guide. Turn a broken face in sunlight: feldspar — the mineral quartz is most often mistaken for, and the only mineral group more abundant in the crust — splits along cleavage planes that flash like tiny mirrors. The impostors and their exits

Each lookalike exits on a different property. Calcite exits twice — a knife cuts it and vinegar fizzes on it. Feldspar exits on the cleavage flash. How do you know if a rock is quartz?
Test three things. Hardness: quartz scratches a glass bottle and a steel knife leaves no mark on it. Fracture: broken surfaces curve in smooth shells rather than stepping along flat planes. Luster: glassy on fresh breaks. Add a white streak and no reaction to vinegar, and very little else in an ordinary landscape fits.
What is the difference between quartz and feldspar?
Cleavage. Feldspar splits along flat planes, so broken grains flash like tiny mirrors when turned in light; quartz has no cleavage and breaks in curved, non-reflective shells. Feldspar also runs slightly softer and often shows subtle porcelain-like opacity, where quartz leans glassy and greasy.
How can I tell quartz from calcite?
Two checks, either decisive. A steel knife scratches calcite easily at Mohs 3 and cannot touch quartz at 7. Vinegar fizzes on calcite and sits inert on quartz. Calcite also splits into neat rhombs along its cleavage, while quartz shatters in curved shells — three separate properties, all pointing the same way.
Is my quartz crystal natural or glass?
Look inside and at the geometry. Manufactured glass and crystal often carry round gas bubbles; natural quartz never does. Real crystals show six-sided prisms with fine horizontal lines across the prism faces, and quartz is noticeably harder — it scratches glass with ease, so a glass fake cannot scratch a genuine quartz specimen.
