Orange rock identification

The first question about an orange stone is whether the color goes through it or sits on it. Iron staining — limonite paint over ordinary quartz — fakes more orange finds than any mineral, and a filed corner exposes it in seconds. The genuine articles are carnelian, orange calcite, sunstone and heat-colored quartz.

The coat test comes first

Iron is a house painter. Groundwater carrying dissolved iron leaves limonite films on whatever it seeps past, and the result is orange quartz, orange feldspar and orange sandstone that are none of those things underneath. So the first move on any orange find is destructive in the smallest way possible: file or chip one corner. Pale interior, painted stone — and the identification restarts with the true color. Sunstone is the one with a light trick of its own: tilt it and copper-colored platelets inside flash in sequence — schiller — which no stain and no dye reproduces. Carnelian shares its glow test with the whole chalcedony family; the boundary with deeper shades runs through red rock identification.

Two orange stories worth knowing

Most commercial citrine began purple. Heated amethyst turns orange — deep color at the points, white at the base — and gift shops sell the result as citrine by the ton; the honest version of that story, and the zoning checks that catch it, live on the crystal identifier page. Natural citrine runs paler and rarer, which is exactly why the saturated clusters are the suspect ones.

The other story happens after dark. Questions people ask

What rock is orange in color?
Most orange field finds are ordinary quartz or sandstone wearing an iron-oxide coat. The through-and-through oranges are carnelian — translucent chalcedony — orange calcite, which fizzes in vinegar, and sunstone feldspar with its metallic glitter. Scratch an edge first: if the inside is pale, the orange was a coat.
How can I tell carnelian from orange calcite?
Two checks in opposite directions. A steel nail slides off carnelian at Mohs 7 but scratches calcite at 3 with ease; vinegar sits silent on carnelian and fizzes on calcite. They can look nearly identical polished, which is why tumbled orange calcite is so often sold under carnelian's name.
Why is my orange stone white inside?
Because the orange was a surface job: iron minerals in groundwater stain the outside of quartz, feldspar and sandstone, and the stain goes no deeper than a coat of paint. File or chip one corner — a pale interior means stained ordinary rock. Genuine carnelian and calcite carry their color all the way through.
