How to identify petrified wood

Petrified wood is a contradiction you can hold: tree anatomy — grain lines, growth rings, knots, even bark texture — in a stone that scratches glass and weighs three times what wood should. Confirm both halves: the wood structure proves what it was, and the quartz behavior proves what it has become.
The two-natures test

Both natures are mandatory. A weathered gray stick passes every wood check and floats; a banded siltstone passes every stone check but its stripes run flat and parallel, without rings, knots or rays. The convincing fakes fail on detail — nothing counterfeits cell structure — and the disappointing finds are usually just wood-grained sedimentary layers doing an impression.

Where the find lies decides whether it can leave.
