Metamorphic rock identification

Metamorphic rocks are older rocks reorganized by heat and pressure, and the first question is whether that pressure left stripes. Foliated rocks climb a ladder — slate, phyllite, schist, gneiss — that records increasing grade. Non-foliated ones, marble and quartzite above all, separate with a drop of vinegar and a scratch.

The foliated ladder

Foliated rocks carry stripes or sheets because pressure aligned their minerals, and the ladder below is one rock — originally mud — at four increasing grades. Read texture coarseness as temperature.

The tap test earns its place at rung one: shale and slate look alike and split alike, but a slate plate held loosely and tapped gives a faint ring where shale gives a dead thud — recrystallization stiffened it. That plus a fingernail (shale marks, slate resists) settles the pair without tools.

The non-foliated four

No stripes does not mean no metamorphism. These four recrystallized without aligning, usually because their minerals are not platy.

Marble against quartzite is the family’s classic trap, and the two-test sequence — vinegar first, then glass — resolves it in ten seconds. Soapstone sits at the other extreme: the softest field identification in this guide, since its talc is the softest mineral on the Mohs scale.

Where the family gets mistaken

Both mistakes run in one direction. Gneiss gets called granite because it kept granite’s ingredients — the difference is the banding pressure added, and the random-speckle side of that comparison lives in igneous rock identification. Slate gets called shale because it kept shale’s habit of splitting — the difference is the ring and the hardness, and the bedded side of that comparison lives in sedimentary rock identification.

Questions people ask

How do you identify a metamorphic rock?
Look for organization that pressure would produce: flat sheets, wavy light-and-dark bands, or sparkle from aligned mica. If stripes are there, place the rock on the slate-to-gneiss ladder by how coarse the texture is. If not, test the two sugary candidates — marble fizzes in vinegar, quartzite scratches glass and stays silent.
What does foliated mean?
Foliation is the layering pressure writes into rock: platy minerals like mica rotate until they lie parallel, producing sheets, sheen or bands. It is not sedimentary bedding — beds are flat deposits, while foliation often wraps and contorts. A rock that splits into plates but rings when tapped is foliated slate, not layered shale.
How do you tell marble from quartzite?
Two tests, ten seconds. Vinegar: marble is calcite and fizzes, quartzite never reacts. Scratch: quartzite scratches a glass bottle with ease, while a steel nail marks marble. The pair looks nearly identical — both pale, sugary, dense — which is why this is the most common metamorphic misidentification there is.
What rock does shale turn into?
Shale climbs the whole foliated ladder as grade increases: first slate, which splits into ringing flat plates; then phyllite with its silky sheen; then glittering schist as mica grows visible; and finally banded gneiss near melting. Each step is the same original mud, one notch hotter and more squeezed.
